A fusion of abstract oil painting and dynamic digital artwork. Through the juxtaposition of two distinct mediums, I aim to explore the fascinating interplay between the artist's hand and the creative potential of digital algorithms.
In my practice, I am intrigued by the dichotomy of mark-making's organic energy with the generative qualities of digital art. Each stroke of the palette knife carries the artist's intent, while the digital realm introduces an element of unpredictability and spontaneity through algorithmic processes.
Expanding upon the concept of a wall drawing by Sol LeWitt, approaching digital drawing akin to providing instructions to a machine, I navigate a realm where logic meets improvisation. What initially began as a structured, step-by-step execution has evolved into a process enriched by random elements, yielding unexpected and compelling results.
The rhythm of a p5 digital artwork is like a looping beat, each frame filling new layers of form and texture. Yet, amidst this iterative movement, I ponder the essence of what makes an artwork truly unique. Can the lyrical quality of gestural expressions, imbued with the artist's human touch, be replicated in the digital realm? Or does the digital medium possess its own vitality and charm, beyond human intervention?
In presenting two oil paintings, one overlaid with a projected digital artwork, I invite viewers to contemplate these questions and explore the dynamic relationship between tradition and innovation, intentionality and serendipity. Through this dialogue between mediums, I aim to challenge preconceptions and spark a deeper appreciation for the boundless possibilities of artistic expression.
“When an artist uses a conceptual form of art, it means that all of the planning and decisions are made beforehand and the execution is a perfunctory affair. The idea becomes a machine that makes the art.” Quote by Sol LeWitt
